CHAPTER 11

THE WATER BELOW then was twenty-three feet deep, and Echo was still holding him us ap Billy talked.

“ . . . . So Billy Sage, as a favor to Big Owl, gave a guy named Dickie Slater instructions for killing her. Put a gun to her head and make sure she took all the pills. The leader has to have something on every member in the club. Dickie’s really a softie who wanted to be accepted in the club, but nobody had anything serious on him. That’s why he was picked when the call was made.”

Echo looked out across the moon-lit lake. Fat-ass Dickie had played him, sent him on a wild boar hunt. “How did Dickie get her to come to the Full Moon?”

“He didn’t. Big Owl told her to go there and pick up some money from the guy in Room 102. She was blackmailing him for the money, so he knew she would come pick it up, even at Full Moon.”

Echo smiled while thinking of Dickie, though he was actually mad now. He released Billy and began swimming back to shore.

Brian and the two trainees watched as Echo climbed out of the cold water. Kiandra had a blanket and a few beach towels ready for him. The Escalade was running, and the heat was blasting inside. She walked up to Echo as he began stripping own to his boxer shorts. She said, “You let him drown without recording a confession?”

“I ain’t been swimming in a while, and I was too tired to bring his ass back. We coulda both drowned. Thank God I made it back.” He wrapped himself in the blanket and placed both towels over his head. “Get my shoes and clothes.” He headed for the front passenger’s seat of Kiandra’s SUV. He stopped and looked at Brian and Etceterra. “What the fuck y’all staring at?”

Etceterra said, “I know it’s cold out here, you being wet and all, but the suspense is killing us. What did he kill her? Was he the father of the baby?”

“He didn’t kill her. Dickie Slater killed her and pointed me at the wrong man.”

Brian said, “Oh, so you and Kiandra let a homely square put dough in your toaster. At least Halo didn’t trick me and Etceterra.”

Echo said, as his teeth clacked together twice, “Bet a pizza I’mma step off in Dickie’s ass before you get at Halo.”

“That’s a good bet.”

Echo walked to the Escalade and opened the front passenger’s door. He looked back at Brian and Etceterra. “Leslie was carrying Big Owl’s baby. Remember seeing that name in the case files?”

They stared at Echo, surprised.

“She was blackmailing him, and he wanted her dead.” Echo got inside Kiandra’s vehicle and closed the door.

She said, “Somehow, that doesn’t shock me.” She threw the gear in Reverse. “Where to?”

“You still on your period?”
